Recommend me books. Anything.

Yes, I'm still alive

Just busy, so seems like I don't have time for LJ. I'm enjoying Uni and the renewed interest in BD RPGs. And disenjoying (wonderful word ;) ) mononucleosis which was diagnosed today but comparing to all the horror stories I've heard of it, it's quite ok (at least now when the worst days are probably over).

More from me some day when I have more time and enthusiasm for updates!

A good reason to finally pick up his books?

Your result for Which fantasy writer are you?...

Orson Scott Card (b.1951)

-1 High-Brow, -17 Violent, 19 Experimental and 21 Cynical!

Congratulations! You are Low-Brow, Peaceful, Experimental and Cynical! These concepts are defined below.

Although primarily known for his science fiction novels, Orson Scott Card is also a prominent fantasy writer. His suite of books known as The Tales of Alvin Maker are among the finest examples of how fantasy can combine page-turning narration with a discussion of deeper moral messages. The books are set in an alternate world where, among other things, the French Revolution never happened, which has made America look quite different than in the world we're familiar with. Apart from showing a different political map, the world of The Tales of Alvin Maker features functioning magic, the European settlers of North America bringing various forms of folk-magic with them to their new home. Here they confront Native Americans, who also use magic, but of a slightly different type. The protagonist, Alvin, is a seventh son of a seventh son and as such has great magic powers at his disposal. Much of the series comes forth as an attempt to discuss the birth of the US and celebrating its virtues without shunning away from the mistakes that have been made.

Card is one of the most appealing story-tellers alive today and has the ability to combine his light and easy prose with experimenting with what fantasy can be, by bringing up subjects such as racism and slavery, by using alternate world settings and last but not least by letting the "small world" of family-life (complete with sibling envy from those who weren't born with the ability to do magic) have a prominent place in his stories.

Card is also one to propagate against violence, but without falling into the trap of being unrealistic or romantically pacifist. The question of who should be reading Card, those who want to be entertained or those who want to be challenged is easily answered: They all should!

You are also a lot like Katharine Kerr.

If you want some action, try Lian Hearn.

If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, China Miéville.

Your score

This is how to interpret your score: Your attitudes have been measured on four diffent scales, called 1) High-Brow vs. Low-Brow, 2) Violent vs. Peaceful, 3) Experimental vs. Traditional and 4) Cynical vs. Romantic. Imagine that when you were born, you were in a state of innocence, a tabula rasa who would have scored zero on each scale. Since then, a number of circumstances (including genetical, cultural and environmental factors) have pushed you towards either end of these scales. If you're at 45 or -45 you would be almost entirely cynical, low-brow or whatever. The closer to zero you are, the less extreme your attitude. However, you should always be more of either (eg more romantic than cynical). Please note that even though High-Brow, Violent, Experimental and Cynical have positive numbers (1 through 45) and their opposites negative numbers (-1 through -45), this doesn't mean that either quality is better. All attitudes have their positive and negative sides, as explained below.

High-Brow vs. Low-Brow

You received -1 points, making you more Low-Brow than High-Brow. Being high-browed in this context refers to being more fascinated with the sort of art that critics and scholars tend to favour, while a typical low-brow would favour the best-selling kind. At their best, low-brows are honest enough to read what they like, regardless of what "experts" and academics say is good for them. At their worst, they are more likely to read what their neighbours like than what they would choose themselves.

Violent vs. Peaceful

You received -17 points, making you more Peaceful than Violent. This scale is a measurement of a) if you are tolerant to violence in fiction and b) whether you see violence as a means that can be used to achieve a good end. If you aren't, and you don't, then you are peaceful as defined here. At their best, peaceful people are the ones who encourage dialogue and understanding as a means of solving conflicts. At their worst, they are standing passively by as they or third parties are hurt by less scrupulous individuals.

Experimental vs. Traditional

You received 19 points, making you more Experimental than Traditional. Your position on this scale indicates if you're more likely to seek out the new and unexpected or if you are more comfortable with the familiar, especially in regards to culture. Note that traditional as defined here does not equal conservative, in the political sense. At their best, experimental people are the ones who show humanity the way forward. At their worst, they provoke for the sake of provocation only.

Cynical vs. Romantic

You received 21 points, making you more Cynical than Romantic. Your position on this scale indicates if you are more likely to be wary, suspicious and skeptical to people around you and the world at large, or if you are more likely to believe in grand schemes, happy endings and the basic goodness of humankind. It is by far the most vaguely defined scale, which is why you'll find the sentence "you are also a lot like x" above. If you feel that your position on this scale is wrong, then you are probably more like author x. At their best, cynical people are able to see through lies and spot crucial flaws in plans and schemes. At their worst, they are overly negative, bringing everybody else down.

Update

So, what should I start with? I officially graduated from upper secondary (high school) yesterday. I can't complain about my exam results - L (the best) in Finnish, History, English and Swedish, E (the second best) in Spanish and M (the third best) in French. I also got three different grants/prizes/whatevers, 100e for doing well in the exams, a very boring book for being good at History and the main Finnish Swedish language newspaper for one year for being good at Swedish. That last bit is a bad joke, I have leafed through that newspaper occasionally and I barely understand the headlines!

We had a nice ceremony at Helsinki City Theatre and after that, I had a party of my own at home. It was great, my mum had arranged everything very well and we had good food and the guests were great... my closest relatives (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins), a few friends and three of my favourite teachers. I had good time but people took way too many photos of me.

After that I went to have a second party with my closest friends - Maria, Annina and Linda - but we just mostly hung around and went for a drink at one café in the city centre. It was nice. We stayed up rather late so I only woke up around 1pm and then slowly wandered home from Maria's place. Today I've been merely laying on the lawn by the local beach reading a novel and eating yesterday's leftovers, quite nice.

What next? I still have one University entrance exam to go. (The two other ones, btw, went well or okay-ish. The English exam was full of nit-picking about things hardly mentioned in the books and the History one had one rather horrible essay topic, but I think it's totally up to the level of the applicants whether I get in or not... I have a better feeling about History, I must say.) So, besides enjoying the summer weather Finland has been lately blessed with, I will be studying Art History for the next two weeks. I was also summoned to the interview and exams for both the nurse and the social worker training and reading about what's done there I concluded there's no way I don't get in. (So, even if I fail at Uni entrance exams I'll have something to do next year!) Then, of course, I have work up until the start of July and I suppose there will be various minor things to do in June.

But... July... I'm SO looking forward to it! No work, no studying, but just holiday and InterRailing! Looks like we're going to travel for four weeks and our current plan is to take a plane or a raft to Berlin (and see Leonard Cohen there) and then go to the Czech Republic, then Austria, then make a swift trip to Italy (just visiting Venice!), then to Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, back to Germany, Denmark, Sweden and back home by ship. It will be so cool! I'm only rather sad that Linda is insisting on not coming after all, but we'll either manage to make her change her mind or have fun without her...

And as for after July, I can't even think that far but I know 'downers are coming to Finland! Cool.

Hi there people, it's me again

News?

I got the job from Amnesty. I'm just calling old Amnesty members and trying to convince them to give more money for campaigning for the victims of the crisis in Gaza. It's quite fine - but then again, I've only had to work for 15 minutes this far! We'll see how it turns out (I have three shifts this week, tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday). If I do badly, they will kick me out after the first two weeks... eeksies. Well I won't stress about that now.

Otherwise, I'm doing fine except regretting that I chose to mod a ww game now. It's great fun but I'm dreadfully busy even without it! It's a bit more than two weeks until entrance exams and I have quite a lot to study yet... I made myself a schedule and I think I can manage it.

Or, I COULD manage it if my mum wasn't all the time fussing about the *insert ugly word here* graduation party. I can't understand why she's so stressed about it! She should just take it easy. Quite frankly, no one cares if the floors have not been washed before it or if there are not dozens and dozens of different foods. The main point is that there's something good to eat, the house looks presentable and most importantly, that people have good time. (And they will enjoy themselves more if the hostess is not dead stressed all the time!) Well I guess I may have time to help her with cleaning and cooking a bit but I'm sceptical when it comes to having time to look for a new party dress. My old one is very pretty and I like it so I'm not actually sorry at all!

I guess there's nothing else as for now... except that my studying rules state (except from going to sleep 1am and waking up 9am) that I may not hang around uselessly on the internet (so e-mail and BD and MSN don't count ;)) so I'm cutting out LJ (and Facebook) until the 28th. So don't wonder if you don't see me around. (Except if my e-mail warns me people have commented on this entry, I may come and comment back sometime later this week, but just once. :))

Me and my life

I just sent in my Uni application form... I applied to Art History as my first choice, History as the second and English as the third one. The exam days are June 15th, May 28th and May 26th respectively, so I should really start studying. *deep sigh* Well, fortunately I have quite a strong basis for all of them and I've been studying History a lot recently.

I also had to make a back up plan in case I mess things up and don't get in, so I also applied to study to become a nurse or a social worker. If I get in there and not into Uni, I will just study there for a year and apply to Uni again next year. Nothing bad with nurses or social workers, but I'm just more of the academic type. However, if I study something like that for a year, I can get summer jobs or even part-time jobs really easily and also, they will be a lot more meaningful jobs than selling hamburgers or whatever.

As for jobs, I've been looking for one lately. I have already been summoned to one job interview - with good luck I will be working for Amnesty's tele"marketing" soon!

Me here

Well, not much to say, or rather, not much time to write. Current news in short: I'm back from Portugal (I came about a week ago and it was lovely there) but going to Prague tomorrow (yayayayayay). According to the preliminary results, it looks like I'll be getting the top grades in Finnish and History, the second best one in Spanish and the third best one in French (there are six passing grades in total). Not bad. I'm finally proceeding with writing&speech final work and feel good about it. So, everything's nice except that I only have a few weeks to decide what I want to study. Currently, I'm tempted by history of art.

Umm... hi friends

I'm still alive and the aliens haven't kidnapped me, I'm just ridiculously busy with final exams. I have Finnish, History and French next week, wish me luck! Then I have a week's pause and after that, my Spanish exam... but don't expect to see me after that either because I'm going for a holiday to Portugal! (Maria's mum is as kind as to take Maria, Annina, Linda and me there. Awesome.) And once I come back I have to start studying for University entrance exams (btw someone please tell me quick what I want to study!  I have to fill in the application forms soon! I've been thinking of History or English or even Spanish or Literature or something but I'm really quite unsure...) and work and I really, really want to go to Prague as well... so it looks like a busy spring... but knowing myself I will find time to be online anyway, so you'll be hearing of me. ;)

My life right now

I'm incredibly busy and I use all my time at home to either doing homework or hanging around online. Doesn't make me feel too sane.

I'm glad there's just one week like this anymore. And I swear to myself I won't resort to skipping classes or buying everything unnecessary that tastes good next week. I've been doing both of those too much lately.

I'm grateful to my speech teacher. She promised to give me a deadline. Now I might get my creative writing & speech final works done.

Your favourite (?) penguin here

There's so much to write about. I feel like a long serious ramble about future coming, I'd love to do a meme about last year and I'd like to tell you how great and beautiful time I had during the holidays... but that all will wait, we'll see when I have time to ramble. Someone sick has given me FOUR work shifts this week so I won't have too much time if I want to maintain a social life as well.

But now you've heard enough of me to know that I'm here and safe and doing well and enjoyed my holidays, which should be enough for a few days. If I'm unable to go to sleep I might return here to ramble about stuff. We'll see.

Yeah, sure. :D

WHAT WILL YOU DANCE TO AT YOUR WEDDING?

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In September I gave [info]joelcornah a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). In February I turned [info]orominuialwen in for running naked in the mall (3 points). In August I farted in an elevator (-6 points). Last Saturday I gave [info]irhinoceri a Dutch Oven (-10 points). Last Sunday I set [info]valesse's puppy on fire (-66 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-29 points). For Christmas I deserve a spanking!

First day at work

So, today I had my first day at work. It was nice and not boring at all. All my co-workers are very nice and they were also very patient with me. I learned so much! I love learning even non-intellectual stuff like that. But there are still a lot of things I can't do and I hope I learn before I'm supposed to know them... and that's rather soon. Okay, the beginning was a mess because the person in charge didn't even know I was supposed to come to work that day - but she coped with it admirably and like I said, it all went very well. One dork drunk guy tried to first sell and then give me drugs and was otherwise behaving a little inappropriately too but he understood the word "no" clearly and wasn't threatening at all or anything. I wouldn't probably even remember him anymore if it hadn't been the first time someone tries to offer me drugs. It was weird. Anyway, I have my next work shift on Wednesday and I assume it will go well too...

Shoes, gender differences and shopping

I'm still not in a particularily good mood, but a lot better.  I'm just annoyed by the fact that my boots take in water so whenever I walk somewhere, I get my toes wet and cold. (That's why I picked that cute blue penguin userpic, I kind of relate with him.) My mum won't take my boots to a cobbler (ha!) because she insists they are horrible wrecks, not boots anymore. So, I've got to go to buy new ones sooner or later... Not an enjoyable thought since I really like these old shoes and because I absolutely detest shopping shoes. I can only stand it if I find good ones in half an hour, which happens very seldom.

I guess I'm a bad woman to say that. I also see no point in shopping bags. Why do you need so many of them? What's fun in shopping them? Actually, I don't get any of the assumed female shopping obsessions. Okay, shopping make-up or clothes is ok if I need something, it does not make me despair and I occasionally (but very, very rarely) buy something like that just for fun.

Furthermore, I think I dislike even more things women are supposed to like by default. Jewellry? I leave it for magpies. I very seldom have any jewellry on me (except earrings), only on special days and even then it doesn't bring me any particular delight. Perfumes? Come on, we don't live in the 18th century where people didn't wash themselves and had to cover the foul smell with some icky flower odour.

Small wonder then that I tend to score something like 40% man in those silly "mental gender" tests. But now that I think of it, I do not definitely like shopping things men are supposed to like by default. In fact, they are even worse. Cars, tools, electronic gadgets? Ewww, I'd rather run away. Okay, with electronic gadgets it's the same as with clothes and make-up: I have nothing against shopping them if I need something but I would very rarely shop anything like that for fun.

Now, thinking about all this, I'm actually seemingly a very ecological consumer. Nice, isn't it? Actually, the only things I shop for fun are books. I wonder what does that tell about me...

I could congratulate myself

The results of my first chunk of final exams have arrived. For both English and Swedish, I got L. (For you non-Finns, that's short for laudatur, and means the top grade.) *wide grin* So, that means that in both of them I was among the best 5% of those who took the exam. Not bad, eh? Just for the record, I got 266/299 points in Swedish (260 would have been enough for L) and 278/299 in English (L came with 270 or higher). The only setback is that now people won't believe anymore if I claim I can't speak Swedish. Men jag kan inte göra det, det är sant!

Another achievement of mine is getting a job. First real job of my life. Yay! I'm gonna work for Hesburger (a Finnish hamburger place) so not anything brilliant, but you know, I'm going to get money and work experience and maybe even have fun. And I managed to make a good impression in a job interview too, that's something that amazes me. :D

Also, I took a quiz but that's hardly an achievement... ;)

I know he's too patriotic, I know he's too right-wing, I know he has some horrible opinions, I know he's not perfect...

but he's BRILLIANT.

I just watched his victory speech and well, here I am, sitting in the school library and I was moved to tears. (More by the hope on the spectators' faces and tears in their eyes than by the speech itself, but that's a side issue.) Oh, I guess I'm glad I have long hair that's always on my face and that I'm sitting in a corner so that there's just a wall in front of me - people would probably consider me crazy for crying for a political speech... but it was just so moving.

A little plea

I've been reading The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall, I'm about halfaway through and I can't understand what's supposed to be so brilliant about it. It's slightly boring, slightly confusing and not very original after all. And most importantly, the book is frustrating when narrating love secenes. It's icky. To preserve my sanity, I should probably refrain from reading anything about love written by young men. All too often the male protagonist is a horrible loser who doesn't understand anything and is terribly easily lead, and the female protagonist, well she's this perfect, self-confident, witty sexy being who is always in control of the situation, a total fantasy character - and still she cares for the dumb guy. Annoys me to no end. It's stupid, it's stereotypic and it's unfair to both men and women. Arggh... Please leave your fantasies out of your books, writers. And please publishers, tell the authors to get rid of this icky stuff and save your readers from being embarrassed on the main character's/author's behalf.

Cleopatra

Cleopatra was arguably the greatest female ruler of all time. She was passionate, brave, and creative. She is said to have impressed even the great Caesar by having herself smuggled into Alexandria in a rug. She was bold and daring, and stronger than any female ruler before her time. She singlehandedly kept Egypt from the jaws of Rome throughout her reign, quite an accomplishment at that time. You, like her, are dignified and graceful, and take pride in all you do. You like to be surrounded by luxury, but you are not distracted, and take your repsonsibilities very seriously.
